EPSR Info Corner

The info corner provides information about the European Pillar of Social Rights (EPSR) and related initiatives. While it serves predominantly as a starting point to get more familiar with the EU social dimension, as well as social policies relevant for the work of our member organisations, it also provides resources to get involved at national level and showcases a brochure of good practices from the network.

The info corner is part of Samaritan International’s “Social Preparedness and Resilience Initiative (SPIRIT), co-funded by the European Commission.

Introduction

The European Parliament, the Council and the Commission proclaimed the European Pillar of Social Rights in 2017 at the Gothenburg Summit. The Pillar sets out 20 key principles which represent the EU’s social compass towards a strong social Europe that is fair, inclusive and full of opportunity in the 21st century.

With the European Pillar of Social Rights Action Plan, the Commission has set out concrete initiatives to build fairer and more well-functioning labour markets as well as good welfare systems for the benefit of all Europeans. Delivering on the Pillar is a joint effort by EU institutions, national, regional and local authorities, social partners and civil society.

A new Action Plan is planned for 2026.

SOLIDAR has created an interactive policy pill on the European Pillar of Social Rights with information about the Pillar’s history, its role in protecting social rights and the scope of the Pillar.

National ressources

The EPSR includes three headline targets:

  • at least 78% of the population aged 20 to 64 should be in employment by 2030
  • at least 60% of all adults should be participating in training every year by 2030
  • a reduction of at least 15 million in the number of people at risk of poverty or social exclusion

The employment and social affairs ministers presented their national targets on 16 June 2022. Combined. Member States’ commitments set the EU firmly on the path to achieving or even exceeding the EU headline targets.
